Juice Chronicles: Carrot Kicker

Hey, just thought i’d share a very simple and easy juice recipe with you. Its one of the first recipes I learned, and my go to, simply for its cheap ingredients. What you’ll need? Simple, apples, carrots, ginger.

You really dont need a lot of apples, as they are really sweet so 2 might enough depending on how many carrots you have. Use ginger according to taste. 1inch is usually enough for most people but if youre like me, 2-3 inches is more like it. This last juicing round, I did a whole bag of organic carrots, 4 apples, 2 inches of ginger. Bon Appetite! Any questions, post below..

Bald Eagles, Harriet Tubman, and Wind

I still have a post on more ways to combat and improve food waste soon but i’m looking to do something special with my mini-me to convey the message more uniquely so stay tuned. In the mean time….

A little over a week ago my mini me and I set out on a fun Saturday adventure. We went to an Eagle Festival on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and it was a fantastic time, despite those deathly winds. A swift reminder that if you’re traveling over an hour, the weather will probably vary. I dressed SO wrong for this day it wasnt even funny.

My outfit was a cross between spring fitness, grocery store run, indoor rock climb haha. Seriously.. On our itinerary was a Harriet Tubman underground railroad hike and somehow I envisioned muddling through the marsh, climbing trees, getting dirty… ehhh I think I exaggerated a bit. Anyway, my goddaughter and I had a lovely time and ill share some of the highlights and troublesome moments…

1. They had a lot of children activities, my little explorer got to paint a shirt, make buttons and more. She loved it!

We went on a 2 hour eagle prowl with a group and it was awesome.. Saw so many eagles! Did I mention I lost our tickets to our reserved spot? Yea.. they fell out my pocket, but somehow we managed to find a ranger who had the list w/our names. He gave us 2 extra tickets to which I had an 11 year old tell me she’d hold them bc clearly I wasnt responsible enough. Hilarious! Yet… sad. I have a few silver sprouters on this noggin but sheesh.

We also did some archery which I feel like in a past life I was totally a professional, buddhist, competitive, cowboy, archer. Yea I just made that up.. but really it was fun and i’d like to get into archery more.

Next up, shooting a bebe gun. Did I spell that right? Now for my country ppl, thats no big deal, in fact my little cousin has one, but ive never held anything close to a gun.. unless paintball guns and water guns count? Anyway, that was fun. Except the part where the target was a turkeys neck and i dont eat meat soooo yea. Our hunter guy was like “shoot that turkey dinner in the neck”… Ehhh. I felt so bad but I really wanted to shoot the bebe gun and it was only a theoretic neck so im in the clear right? and guess what? I aint get the turkeys neck, YAY! haha. Awkward!

Lastly was the Harriet Tubman walk and it was on the anniversary weekend of her death, it was a really good turn out. Over 100 people of EVERY background gathered around. and I must say, Tony Cohen did a great job. A lot of talking… but a great job. Also an antsy 11 year old who was getting tired and I couldn’t be mad.. It was 3pm and we left at 7am.

She learned a lot, I learned a lot.. we had a great fun day! The wetlands in MD are B-E-A-UTIFUL. Stay tuned for our next adventure. Below are a few pics!

*ATTENTION* How to Save Money, Reduce Food Waste, Live Happier

Let me start by saying.. I too am completely guilty of wasting food. And to be even more honest, I wasted a batch of kale last week due to lack of time. I know I know *enters cyber scold here :(* BUT there’s hope, and i’m pleased to say, I hardly waste food these days. Here are 5 QUICK and effective tips to help you save food, time, money, and the environment, applicable to everyday life. So if you love to save MONEY, love the environment, or simply want to be more efficient, read on my friend…

I. Plan Ahead! Why?

When you buy food without a plan, you end up buying things you dont need, simple as that. By planning what youll purchase, you reduce the chance of OVER buying and wasting. So save your pockets, time, and money, and plan ahead. Make a list and stick with it!

II. Dont stack your plate with food you wont eat! Why?

…because you can always go back for a second or third plate. Have you ever filled your plate, and gotten full grabbing your belly halfway? You cant put that food back in its dish so it goes to waste. Cut your plate in half, you can always go back for seconds.

III. Freeze what you can!

At the end of the week, if you haven’t used your produce, freeze it. I often do this when it comes to smoothies and it works just fine. Last night I froze apple slices to use for a later time. Just find out if your food is freezable and for how long. Simple! 🙂

IV.  “..but it’s on sale”

Raise your hand if youve ever bought food just bc its on sale? I see you.. Its fine, we’ve all done it. This one takes mental effort but I assure you, if you have no immediate plan for it, don’t buy it. It will be ok! haha. Yes, you save money, but you also save money that you never spend. To help, check whats on sale online ahead of time at your local grocer to incorporate that into your planning. Win/win!

V. Donate food just sitting in your pantry.. Why?

Chances are, if you haven’t prepared your non-perishable food in 6 months, itll likely go to waste. So if you’ve fallen into the sale trap, just donate what you haven’t used and free up some space in your pantry. The kicker is, don’t let those foods pile back up. Be selective! win/win!

Waste reduction starts with US! Every time we waste food we are not only affecting ourselves, but the environment. In America, our food waste rots in landfills producing harmful emissions. Check out this article The Washington Post did on food waste in America 6 months ago ( http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2012/08/22/how-food-actually-gets-wasted-in-the-united-states/ ) Food waste is an issue on corporate levels, and personal. So lets all do our part. We literally have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Also visit, http://www.unep.org/wed/ to find out TONS about food waste, what we can do about it, and how to help the environment. This years World Environment Day theme is Think. Eat. Save.
